A wild after-hours melee outside The District Sports Lounge, a bar inside the popular Quinnz Pinz bowling alley in Middletown, has led the city to shut the bar down until further notice.
Police say the fight broke out around 2:25 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot, drawing a large and unruly crowd. One person was arrested for disorderly conduct.
In the chaos, Middletown police say one of their officers crashed into another vehicle at the corner of Railroad Avenue and North Street while responding to the scene. No one was seriously hurt, and the collision remains under investigation.
Mayor Joe DeStefano says the bar had fire code violations and was illegally subleasing the space, and that it will remain closed while the state Liquor Authority reviews the matter.
Owner Jamie Quinn tells News 12 the incident happened after closing, outside in the parking lot, and blames the trouble on people hanging out after being turned away at the door.
“That was after we closed in our parking lot,” Quinn said. “These issues are not internal. They are more about people coming in and they’re being turned down at the door and they just wanna hang out in the parking lot and drink.”
Quinn says the closure is just a “paperwork issue” and claims the bar could reopen this weekend.
“It’s just a little red tape paperwork. We’re hoping to open up this afternoon if not a little bit later,” she said.
Some residents say the violence in the city is becoming a growing concern.
“It’s getting really bad in Middletown, New York. I was born and raised here,” said one woman who didn’t want to give her name.
This is the second after-hours incident outside a Middletown bar in two weeks. The weekend before, there was a shooting outside the Switch Inn. No injuries were reported in that case.
