A 36-year-old man hit and killed while crossing Church Avenue Thursday afternoon has been identified as Fausto Diaz, according to family members.
The crash happened around 1:15 p.m. at the corner of Church Avenue and East 55th Street in East Flatbush. Police say Diaz was crossing the street when he was struck by a white van heading east. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital but did not survive. A source tells News 12 he died of head trauma.
The driver, 58-year-old Winston Reid, of Queens, stayed at the scene and was taken into custody shortly after. He’s now facing several charges, including vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, and driving while ability impaired, according to police.
On Friday, a small flower memorial was placed at the corner where Diaz landed.
Diaz’s twin brother, Jose Diaz, told News 12 that Fausto was well known in the neighborhood and walked that block often.
"He’s my twin brother — he was a good person. My family is devastated. We lost a person that was everything for us," Jose said.
The NYPD has not released additional details, and the investigation is ongoing.
Vision Zero data shows that in the past two years there have been at least four traffic-related injuries at the intersection. There have also been multiple injuries at neighboring intersections along Church Avenue.
