Fire erupted in the walls of a beloved restaurant in Rye, leaving behind extensive damage.
It happened Monday around 9:45 p.m. at Delicias Arellano, also known as Midland Avenue Deli. It's located at 382 Midland Ave.
"Everything's destroyed," says Elizabeth Rendon, owner of the restaurant.
Rendon says it all started with a strong smell of smoke.
"Since we didn't see it, we had to call the fire department. They checked around, that's when they told us to evacuate because they found the source inside the walls," Rendon tells News 12.
Fire officials say as they worked to locate the source, the smoke conditions intensified.
"Smoke conditions increased, we went to a working fire which brought in more resources," says Capt. Clyde Pitts, with the Rye Fire Department.
Everyone made it out safely, according to officials.
The cause is believed to be accidental.
"It's going to be very challenging for us to put it back together," says Rendon.
This restaurant was a long time dream for Rendon.
"My mother had a small, also Mexican restaurant in Port Chester, I always looked up to her," Rendon explains.
It has become a community staple since opening six years ago.
"This is where we are day, afternoon, night. This is the only thing we depend on," says Rendon.
The cost and timeline of repairs are still being figured out.
"It's an amazing community and we hope we can still stay here to keep on helping, and serving and just being a part of Rye," Rendon tells News 12.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help.
